Winter fashion shoe styles for women

It may be warm and sunny now, but before we know it the bitter winds of winter are going to be howling. It's the season of red cheeks, thick coats, and soft, warm sweaters. As summer draws to a close, we'll be tossing those strappy sandals to the back of our closets, but what can we replace them with that will be fabulous with thicker knits and those rosy cheeks? Shoes for winter can be tricky because of the weather, but here is a guide with a few suggestions for some essential winter footwear and when to wear it
Boots: Of course, the most obvious winter staple is a pair of boots. But just the term "boots" is awfully broad. As a matter of fact, I would break this into three subcategories.
1. Snow Boots. If you live in a climate that dumps inches of frozen precipitation down every year, a good pair of snow boots are essential. Walk to work in them or wear them for some snowy fun; either way you'll be glad you had them when your feet are warm and dry after trekking about out in the snow. There are more options than just the plastic-looking kids' snow boots, though. Look for sleek designs in fabrics and colors that you like. Last year, many styles came with fur trim.
2. Rain Boots. You might think of these more for spring than winter, but they can be invaluable when that pleasant winter snow of today turns into the grimy slush of tomorrow. Rain boots often come in a variety of cute colors and patterns, so even when the weather's not cooperating you can feel bright and sunny.
3. Casual Boots: These are the kind of nice boots that you will wear with an indoor outfit. Try looking for quality materials like leather or suede, and choose a style that's going to be versatile. If you can wear them with both skirts and jeans, you'll get your money's worth. They're great for winter, just be careful that you don't ruin nice suede or leather boots in the snowy streets.
Tennies: Yes, sneakers are still allowed at the front of your closet once the winter winds start blowing. Look for fun colors for your tennies so that they don't just look like an "I give up" shoe. In winter, they're probably best to wear on days that are cold but not snowy. They provide good traction for ice, but many tennies don't have very good wet protection, and if they get wet your socks will too.
Flats: Flats in more muted tones and heavier constructions can be great casual wear for winter. They have the same rules as tennies though - avoid wearing them in snow or slush!
Pumps: Just because it's winter doesn't mean you can't dress up. If you walk to work or school, carry a pair of pumps in your bag to change into when you get there. Thick, supportive styles that aren't too strappy are going to work best with the thicker fabrics of your wardrobe. If your favorite pair has a peep-toe, you can revive them for winter by wearing tights.
One important thing to remember for all winter footwear is that when the weather's brutal outside, it's brutal on your footwear as well. Slush and snow can cause water damage to shoes, and many counties salt the sidewalks to avoid icy buildup. Anytime that you're going to be walking anywhere outside, it's a good idea to be wearing high-traction, water proof boots that are going to be resilient to stains from salt. Then, on sunnier days when the sidewalks are clear you can rock whatever shoes you want without worrying about ruining them. In the right pair of shoes, not even the bitter howls of winter wind will be able to bring you down

The Goth Rundown

You might think that being goth means that you worship the devil and drink blood for breakfast, but that isn't the case. In fact, there are several types of goths - from the cyber goth to the punk goth - each has a style all of their own. Traditionally, goth style involved a lot of black clothing, make-up and even hair. Today, peeps are re-inventing the goth look though, with some of your fave celebs (like the boys of Good Charlotte) sporting their very own goth fashions.

Top Five Goth Essentials

  • Black Nail Polis h - whether you're a boy or a girl a good bottle of black nail polish is a must-have for the a spiring goth.
  • Black Boo ts - search out a pair of boots that you know you'll wear a lot. If you're a girl, make sure they look good with skirts and pants. Versatility is key.
  • Hair dye- this can either be black hair dye or some exotic, bright color used to highlight your dark hair. T ry something like Manic Panic.
  • Studs and/or Zippers - if you don't have anything with studs or zippers, add some onto an old bag or grab a cool, old leather jacket from a thrift store that you can alter.
  • Black Eyeliner - again, it doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl, you gotta have the black eyeliner. Great for lining lips, eyes or drawing stuff on your face.

    Goth Make-Up Tips

Avoid slathering on too much make-up, cuz excessive make-up is not attractive - it doesn't work for aging country music stars, and definitely won't work for you. Stick to basics like lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara and some eyeliner. If you want to be a bit more daring, draw some sort of funky shape around one eye with some liquid eyeliner (you'll probably be able track that down at your local drugstore).
  • How to shop

    1. Shop by yourself or bring along a totally trusted, stylish friend (or your oh-so fashionable mom, in my case!)
    2. Use the three-way mirror. What may look fabulous from the front could look totally drab from the back.
    3. Dress/beautify for shopping so you don't look like a troll in the mirrors. Stick with your everyday makeup and jewelry.
    4. Set a budget and don't budge!
    5. Yeah, you're a junior: so what? If you wear a size 4 or smaller, try shopping in Girls' departments. For all sizes, the Boys' dept. has fabulous basics: tees, buttondowns, sweaters, etc.
    6. Try a new store each time at the mall and shop out of your price range (under or over ) to find new looks.
    7. Touch, touch touch. Garmentos judge an item by it's "feel."
    8. Always try on and makeno exceptions.
    9. Don't be in a hurry: allot enough time.
    10. Make sure you have on the right undergarments, especially for formal dresses, camisoles, etc.

HEY GUYS WHAT ABOUT NEW PUNK FASHION TIPZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As both a witness and victim of punk fashion, this early 1970's style has continued to somehow hold it's head above water in a modern-day society. Nowadays, dressing punk is as easy as going to your local alternative clothing store, picking up an overpriced outfit, and sporting it along with a short and stubby faux-hawk, whilst listening to an embarassingly bad attempt at punk rock by whining angry pop-star bands like Avril Lavigne and Sum 41.

What punk originally stood for has been lost in a sea of commercialism and a medias perception of an underground culture which it will never understand. This very tragedy was created by those people that the original look was originally trying to get away from. Despite what many say, the fashion isn't about looking tough or trying to put a scare into people. To the majority of punks, the look is just as natural and everyday as the style that any other person is trying to put together.

The look is as original as the music which started it all. Popular punk bands in the 1970's, such as the Ramones and the Sex Pistols started a look that rebelled against everyday fashion - an anti-fashion statement. In the first wave of punk, their way of dress was quite different in the fact that clothes were often homemade and sometimes controversial. As the punk movement evolved into the 80's and early 90's with bands such as the Exploited, Dayglo Abortions, and the Subhumans, the fashion evolved as well. The scene started to gradually change into something even louder. Mohawks got taller, colors were more bold, and the music got more hard, powerful, and raw.

One thing that must be remembered when exerting punk fashion is that it was created in retaliation to the everyday look. If you walk into an alternative store and find yourself an "outfit fit for a punk", you are demonstrating that you see yourself as one of the people who stand against it, while actively participating in what they are rebelling against. How can you obtain an individual look by purchasing a piece of clothing that half the poulation already has? That is what makes being a punk unique - the fact that the look cannot simply be bought like every other look.

In most cases, purchasing clothing that has already been tailored to look homemade is a crime in itself. You are basically buying into somebody else's idea of individualism, and not putting any of your own flare into it. A lot of the clothes that you find in these stores tend to be exaggerated versions of the mainstream

perception on the fashion. Things like safety pins, rips, tears, and random words are so carefully placed on the clothing attempting to look messy and rustic, that they often turn out to be toned down and in proportion - more so for aesthetic appeal.

You would never catch a punk in an alternative clothing store buying a pair of $199 pair of pants. A well dressed punk has the mindset that their clothing can be made with next to no money in their pocket - and that's what it is all about. Making something from nothing, and taking use of the limited materials you have. It's about creativity, imagination, going beyond limitations, and creating something that is a reflection of yourself. Why let somebody else make that decision for you?

Both punk fashion and music knows no boundaries between male or female, as both sexes are embraced. For punk ladies, it is about crushing the standards and ideals that society holds to being a woman, and combines both masculine and feminine attributes. You may catch a female in a pair of bleach-spattered jeans, Doc. Martens, and a muscle shirt - but I can bet you anything that she feels proud, feminine, and beautiful. It is about feeling liberated and powerful in your own skin - not about being pushed around and being told what to do and what to wear.

Take a walk to your local thrift store and look around. Look at everything as though it has potential, because it does! Things like used Chuck Taylors, Doc Marten boots, and Creepers can be bought for next to nothing and decorated to reflect your tastes. Clothing that you would never wear such as frocks and blouses with stripes, plaid, and animal prints can be bought strictly for the patterns on the material, where it can be ripped, cut up, and used to accentuate other clothing. Old pairs of jeans can be tappered, tightened, patched up and sewn or hand stitched with interesting band patches, held together with safety pins, buttons, or zippers, and can be adorned as you so please. Plain T-shirts and tank tops can be transformed with a little bit of bleach, paint, and imagination.

Tights and stockings can be mixed and matched, painted, splattered, cut, ripped, or torn to shreds. Leather and Lycra skirts can be pieced together with other material, trimmed with lace, fake fur, and combined with things like belts, sashes, chains, and pins - the possibilities are endless!

Try visiting an army surplus store. These places are generally more expensive than a thrift store, but contain a lot of new and vintage items such as belts, pants, combat boots, leather coats, and bomber jackets. Add yourself a few patches, spikes, studs, buttons, zippers, pinback logos, and advertise all of your favorite bands by painting murals and creating your own patches to reflect them. Can't find that Buzzcocks or Crass patch you've been looking for? Get yourself some material and some paint, and get to work! Look around, look online, look for deals. Find yourself a button maker and create your own buttons to promote the bands you love. Not all bands, especially that of the underground music scene, have their own merchandise - sometimes you need to create your own

Visit garage sales, go through the junk in your attic, raid the flea market, go on eBay, shop online, or stop into your local art supply and leathercraft store. Get inspired - listen to some music! Get your favorite bands on CD or vinyl and let them show you how to paint that leather jacket of yours. Throw on a pair of ear phones, get yourself some paint, and have at it. Grab a squeeze or spray bottle and fill it with watered down paint or bleach, throw down an old towel or garbage bag, and spruce up that old pair of skinny jeans that have been sitting in your closet all these years. Look at your favorite album covers and draw inspiration from them - try things like silk screening, painting freehand, or making your own stencils to get the design you want.

When it comes to accessories, the list never ends. Again, thrift stores are a goldmine for jewelry, bracelets, belts, rings, buttons, pins, and other various trinkets. When it comes to permanent accessories, such as piercings and tattoos, these are generally a modern addition to the fashion. Just because you don't have any piercings or ink on your body, doesn't make you any less of a punk. I know people that have been part of the subculture for years and have had no more than one pierced ear. On the other hand, I have my loving partner and best friend that has a face adorned with metal. At both ends of the spectrum are two equally dedicated punks who just love to look the way they do - so don't ever feel like you are limiting yourself.

Whether you are male or female, hair goes about the same for both. Messy cuts, spikes, buzz cuts, feathery cuts, Chelsea do's, and bold colored locks are fairly common, as well as the gravity-defying mohawk . There really is no set standard for punk hair, nor is there any limitations either. Just as long as you don't sink to the level of creating yourself a faux-hawk. If you are going for any variation of a mohawk, make it bold and make it stand out. If you wanted to look subtle, but still look punk, you're listening to the wrong lady. If you want some advice from a woman who has been sporting a one foot mohawk for several years, I would say that if you aren't going to go all-out, than why even bother with a mohawk at all. A mohawk is something to be proud of, not something to tone down and hide. Be proud of your feathers, my little cockatoos!

    Fashion and Clothes

Fashion and clothes are usually closely related to each other. Different people hold different ideas about clothes and fashion. In the old days, people worn clothes only to keep warm and they did not have many choices due to the poor technology at that time. However, nowadays, people have a wide choice available in the selection of their clothes and what a person chooses to wear will reflect his or her personality, tastes, likes, mood and so on. When celebrities or people who have cultural status start to wear new or different clothes, a fashion trend may spring up. People who like or respect them may start to wear clothes of a similar style. Therefore, many people regard fashion as to wear these new clothes. As a matter of fact, it is a mistake. Fashion, actually, is a very abstract concept. We can list some some examples of fashion, but we can conclude it to a certain form. In essence, it is a kind of style and ideas about life. It can be a living habit, a lifestyle,or the understanding of the life. Differen ages, different living circles, different occupation, and geography shares different opinions on fashion and clothes. The teens prefer clothes that reprents their individual charactors and they are longing to show their unique charactors. While the celebrities would like to wear clothes that are in coordance with their wealth and status, clothes of all brand names would be within their choice. People from Arabia could not wear the same clothes as people from Japan. And they have their own fashion clothes. Well, to me, the most important thing is that the clothes I wear shall reflect my personalities. Of course, we wear different clothes on different occasions. Different clothes can displays the different aspect of your charactors. It is unnecessary to follow some celebrities to swim in the fashion. If we have our own taste and style, the only thing you need to do is to display yourself, dress what you like. That would be fashionable in others' eyes. Therefore, fashion, in my eyes, is to show our own personality and share our ideas for life in our own way. What is your opinion about fashion and clothes?

Skinny Japanese Role Models for Korean Men?

The more I study feminine shifts in Korean men’s body ideals and fashions of the past decade or so for my MA thesis, the more I’m forced to acknowledge their many Japanese origins beyond the narrow Korean ones that I originally identified. Still, sometimes the differences in culture are just too great for some Japanese trends to ever catch on here, not least because – as Tom Coyner also points out – the socialization process involved in Korea’s mandatory military service for men will always be a strong mitigating factor against them from ever becoming too girly.

If, that is, there’s even a trend to be followed. While interesting, the following article most reminded me of the minor revelation I had ten years ago, which was that sometimes it can be the very act of reporting on trends itself which is what actually creates them, perhaps particularly with the case of the New Zealand Herald that I was reading at the time, which can still make the closest claim (albeit still not quite) to being New Zealand’s only national paper in a population of only four million, and which was thereby very influential in what was still largely a pre-internet age. At least, I think that creating rather than reporting on a trend was the hope of the author and designers featured in this article, although in reality common sense, basic human physiology and innate sexual drives will surely ensure that anorexic men who like being dominated by their larger girlfriends have never been and will never be anything but a fringe minority of any society. Yes, even in Japan too.

In Japan, it’s the men who want to be skinny and cute

By Kaori Shoji, International Herald Tribune

There was a time when slimness was the absolute prerequisite for urban Japanese women, when designers like Shinichiro Arakawa and Yohji Yamamoto professed a flat refusal to make clothes for women who weren’t fragile and thin, whose chests and hips were barely discernible through the fabric.

That aesthetic went out when the health and exercise boom came in about seven years ago – the new Japanese woman, according to the fashion critic Ikuko Hirayama, is: “strong, robust, bursting with energy. She takes care of her body but is not obsessed with being thin. She’s proud of her biceps and also proud of her sexuality.” Accordingly, the most popular relaxation sport for single working women nowadays is “boxercising,” or the combination of boxing moves plus aerobics, which is said to increase adrenaline flow by 80 percent and is an ideal way to blow off aggression and stress.

In stark contrast, it’s the men who want to be slender, vulnerable and protected. Young males between the ages of 18 and 30 make up the slimmest segment of the population and the ideal fashion weight as decreed by the apparel industry is 57 kilograms, or about 125 pounds, for a height of 175 centimeters, or 5 feet 8 inches. Many men try to adhere to that figure and some claim they want to be even skinnier.

skinny-japanese-male-modelsIt was when reading that highlighted part that I first started having misgivings about the article, as I thought that it was claiming that Japanese men that age are lighter than women: ludicrous of course, but then that at least would be in the spirit of it. Otherwise, to point out that they are the lightest group amongst Japanese males as a whole would be as profound and informative as, say, also informing readers that 18-30 year-olds would be the group most likely to be born between 1978 and 1990. So…either the author is padding (no pun intended), is stupid perhaps a little overzealous in getting her (his?) point across, or thinks that readers won’t notice or care about either. Not exactly a good sign.

Twenty-five-year-old Junichi Shirakawa, who works at the denim boutique 45 RPM, said that his goal is to get his weight down from 57 to 55 kilograms, although his height is 182 centimeters. “Being really skinny is essential, not just for fashion and work purposes but also because girls seem to go for thin guys,” he said.

Both Shirakawa and his girlfriend like the fact that she weighs more than he does, and is the leader of the couple. “She’s a lot stronger than I am, can lift heavy things and go drinking until dawn. I admire that about her, and feel protected when I’m around her,” he said. Older than he by five years, it was Shirakawa’s girlfriend who made the approach, started the dating process and decided what course their relationship would take.

“Frankly, I think women should be in the driver’s seat. Society and relationships work better that way,” he said. Shirakawa likes to wear his girlfriend’s clothes and often shows up for work wearing her blouse and jeans, to the general approval of his co-workers.

Hirayama said: “For young men, wearing women’s clothes has almost become a status symbol – a confirmation of being slim and pretty and, therefore, desirable. Young women, on the other hand, are less interested now in looking beautiful for the benefit of young men. They dress up for themselves, for their own satisfaction.”

Needless to say, a quick internet search of fashion critic “Ikuko Hirayama” reveals nothing but this article or expressions of sheer incredulity at the notion of a man wearing women’s clothes to work

    Natural Looking Hair Highlights

Hair highlights are the easiest way to upgrading your hairstyle. Hair highlights come in a variety of colors, but the most appreciated ones are the natural looking highlights

If you are looking for a change when it comes to hair color and you just don't know what to do. You'd like a change but you would keep your hair color. Well if that is the case you can try to create a more exotic and warm effect by adding natural looking highlights to your tresses.

These highlights are great and subtle, perfect for women who don't want an obvious change. The hair will look like it's sun kissed, and natural. The color will be lighter in some parts, creating like a wave effect. These subtle highlights are a great choice for girls who go to schools with strict policies when it comes to appearance. They do not create an extravagant look but a natural, subtle look, appropriate for any type of occasions.

The natural looking highlights lighten by one or two tones the natural hair color, and don't necessarily require the use of foil. Foil accelerates the discoloration process, and since you don't need to achieve a very light color, you can use a highlighting cap.

    blonde hair highlightsnatural looking highlights

These natural looking highlights can be applied however you want because there a a variety of highlighting techniques. All you need to do is choose a good hair colorist and explain to him or her what you desire and how you want your highlights to look.
You can choose to highlight your own hair by using a home hair highlighting kit you can purchase from your local drugstore or department store. You do need a little bit of skill to get the highlights in the exact place and the exact shade you desire, but it's not exactly earth science either.

Make sure you only go one or two shades lighter to make the transition from your natural hair to your highlights very subtle, yet noticeable. Your hair will appear like it has a certain glow, a glow which will make it appear even more healthy and gorgeous

MTV Fashion Hits and Misses vol:2

Hurrying down the Red Carpet, VJ Taya joined the trio to make a picture perfect ‘Fantastic 4’. The term ‘little black dress’ took on a whole new meaning with Taya’s sequined black tube dress. The sequins remind us of Jean Paul Gaultier. Like Utt, she opted for a pouffy hairdo and a chic black look. Unlike Utt, she pulled off the height illusion by cleverly choosing long dangling earrings, a short dress and heels. Smart move, girl. Despite simple black court shoes and a nothing-fancy hairdo, Taya still looked glamorous on the Red Carpet.

We’d like to draw your attention to VJ Mike, if his clothes haven’t already done so. Name me the first thing that shouts out to you. His bright blue tie right? Exactly. The outfit is outlandish (and eye-catching, no doubt) – from its sheen to the mis-matched printed shirt. Let’s give him a makeover. If he likes the tie so much, let him keep it. We’d exchange the shirt for Ralph Lauren’s midnight blue long-sleeved shirt from the Fall collection and swap the blah-brown hat for a cool suede number. Now that’s a far classier look for the Red Carpet.

After such a huge fashion disaster, luckily the sugary sweet Pussycat Dolls came and rescued us. All fashionably dressed, they looked like candy in a store as fans screamed and stretched out their hands in the hope of shaking one of the girls’ hands. The theme for them was obviously black and white. They donned dresses that they shed for leather pants later in the evening for their performance. Nicole’s dress (centre) was the most stunning out the group, with an Egyptian-inspired neckpiece. We’re not convinced of Melody’s nude tube dress (far left) though. It was unflattering to her curves. Valentino’s white ’09 collection would have suited her better. We love the new redhead-do and we sure hope that she stays a redhead. Her choice of dress is not the most flattering as it makes her hips look wider but we do love the cutesy black bow at her waist. White, after all, is a hard colour to wear anyway. We forgive you.

The Red Carpet goes monochrome when K-Pop group, Super Junior, appears. These guys really know how to dress. 11 of them were all clad in varying black and white combos. Upon closer inspection, we realise that the group wore similar tailor-cut pants and shoes! Still, hats-off to Super Junior in representing 11 great designs on the Red Carpet.

This one (above left) caught our attention – a simple black vest worn with an open-buttoned shirt. Nice. The vest could be swapped with a more intricately-designed one like Burberry’s for a touch of class.

Celebs streamed in, often spending more time with the fans than the media. However, UrbanWire got up close and personal with Joey, drummer from The Click Five. He was very friendly and warm but we wished that his outfit reflected that too! He chose a safe number – shirt, tie, cool belt, jeans and a jacket. Calvin Klein’s minimalist chic designs would better suit his quiet yet charming personality. The rest of the boys from Click Five dressed up for the occasion. Lead singer, Kyle, lit the Red Carpet with his stunning white suit.

Soon after the knight in shining white armour came the snow princess – Karen Mok in a white embroidered dress. Co-host Jared Leto’s musky, dark suit complemented Karen’s innocent white look perfectly. Karen’s dress speaks volumes of herself: simple with intricate detailing. Beautiful result, anyway. Jared’s mis-matched sports shoes remind us that he’s not the typical suit guy. At least he knows what’s in this season and got a Ralph Lauren striped jacket. Good on you, Jared.

While the two are busy chatting with fans and the media, the gorgeous Leona Lewis walks in. This woman is a head-turner. She skimmed down the Red Carpet dressed in a languorous black dress with white prints. The sheer finishing didn’t cover much but it did help prevent the dress from becoming just another tube-dress. Leona spells elegance with this silk number.

Show Lo came sparkling with his silver accessories and bejewelled lapels. What intrigues us though, is his red belt. What an eyesore. A simple black leather belt would have made a perfect Show.

Danny, lead from Irish band The Script, simply came in a leather jacket, v-neck shirt and pants. Doesn’t his attire remind you of Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams and Westlife? Even Hillary Duff agrees that “it’s so yesterday, so yesterday…”

Electrico and Stefanie Sun shared the stage and the Red Carpet. Stefanie steals the limelight despite Amanda’s shiny dress. We love Amanda’s new haircut, it gives her an edgier look. Stef’s tightly draped and criss-crossed dress out of Burberry’s A/W 08/09 Collection is an awkward dirty green but she pulls it off with her charming smile and cute shoulder-length cut.

One Republic slowly inched their way to where UrbanWire was as they were stopped by countless fans screaming for autographs. When we saw them up close, we couldn’t help but gawk at what they were wearing. A black cardigan? A v-neck grey shirt and jeans? Perhaps they’ve heard too many rumours that it’s rather hot in Malaysia. In case you’re wondering, yes, they did wear the exact same clothes for their winning performance.

edc Style Award winners, Panic at the Disco played down their costumes and opted for more comfortable shirts, jackets and jeans on the Red Carpet. The only hint of their outrageous and fun-loving personalities was the distinct feather in his cap.

Tor exemplified the natty Red Carpet look perfectly. We love his thin silver tie. Perhaps VJ Mike should learn from Tor and go for thinner ties that better complement the Asian male physique.

Indonesian band, Chicosci, took old school too literally. Donned in chequered and striped shirts complete with jeans and colourful sport shoes, it was a blast from the past. Boys, these are way outdated. Spruce up and try again next year.
